History of Feng Shui
Feng Shui is an ancient practice by people believed to have originated 2000 years ago in China. Its roots lie in early Taoism that has spread beyond Chinese boundaries. Some early examples of its usage can be found in grave sites in China.
What is the meaning of Feng Shui?
The literal meaning of Feng Shui is ‘wind-water’ where Feng means wind while Shui means water. But in reality, it describes the method to harness environmental energies to enhance human lives. And, the way that energy is harnessed and bound with earth and humanity is called chi/qi. Chi consists of both yin and yan elements.
The first and foremost aspect of Feng Shui is to understand the energies of the environment and how they work. Sometimes you feel energetic at a place while some places make you gloomy and sad. This is the act of the environment. If it is acting in your favour, you will be happier. But, if it acts against you, you will feel depressed or sad.
Hence, to practice Feng Shui, you need to find the purpose or problem you have and act accordingly. It helps in solving any issue by aligning or designing your surroundings in line with natural energy. Or in other terms, if we say, it is about aligning your energy with five major elements, which are wood, water, fire, metal, and earth. The compass and the Bagua are the main tools used in Feng Shui. The compass or Luo Pan, consists bands of concentric rings build around the magnetic needle. The bangua or the energy map contains symbols of I Ching (the oracle on which Feng Shui is based).
